When to call a plumber vs DIY in Sandwich: honest advice
Not every plumbing job needs a plumber, and not every plumbing job is safe or sensible to DIY. Here is the honest split we use when people ask us directly.
The genuine DIY jobs
Re-washering a simple traditional tap if you have done it before, replacing a toilet seat, clearing a straightforward sink blockage with a plunger, bleeding a radiator, replacing a shower head, and reseating a loose toilet cistern lid. All reasonable for a competent adult with basic tools.
The maybe-DIY jobs
Replacing a tap outright (fine if you have isolated the supply correctly and have the right tools; a common DIY trap if you have not), fitting a new toilet seat with seized old bolts (worth reading up on before forcing anything), and clearing a stubborn blockage that plunging has not fixed (a hand auger helps, but persistent blockages further down the run are usually better left to us).
The call-a-plumber jobs
Anything involving cutting into a wall or floor to access pipework, bathroom fitting where waste and supply runs need connecting properly, any leak you cannot immediately identify the source of, and any job on an older property where you are not sure what the existing pipework is made of. Getting these wrong costs more to fix afterward than calling in the first place.
The legal line: gas
Any work on a gas appliance, gas boiler, or gas supply pipe must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It is a criminal offence for anyone else to carry out gas work, full stop, regardless of confidence or experience. We are Gas Safe registered, so this is part of our own scope, but the same rule applies whoever you call: always check the registration before letting anyone touch a gas appliance.
